Notes from down South
In wake of the shitstorm of unfortunate events that have befallen us in the last week or so – thought we would take a look at how our friends from the capital of the arrogant star state are doing. They polished off the University of Louisiana at DeRidder in impressive fashion 59-20 (sure do wish one of these quasi directional LA schools was our 1st game)..Colt was fantastic, Jordan was better and the horns rolled although the 20 points given up was the most by a Longhorn team in a home opener in a lot of years..or something.
Vondrell McGee, the every down back Mack has been looking for since Jamaal Charles, fumbled twice and was benched for true freshman WR DJ Monroe. Monroe, 5-9 170 from Angleton, TX by way of the Shire has horn fans beaming about the rebirth of their once stagnant nonexistent running game. He also returned a kickoff for a touchdown – unstoppable.
Injuries hit them a little bit in the opener as well, though not on a Bradford/Gresham scale. Starting guard Michael Huey was carted off with an ankle injury and linebacker Jared Norton was also hurt. Neither will make the trip to mighty Laramie this weekend to face the Cowboys of Wyoming.
Huey - I'm 12 yrs old, 300# and my friggin ankle hurts
Backup freshman lineman Mason Walters was also hurt, so multi-faceted OL, now DL reject Tray Allen will be moving back to OL from his Eldridge style 2 week stint on the DL to provide depth to the OL..depth which may not be as prolific as once thought. Also, Allen is just simply not needed anymore for depth on the DL as the current rotation of full time DL’s completely shut down the running game and created a good interior pass rush against the Red War Hawk Bears of UL DeRidder.
In other news, in a related story that you would never see mentioned on Barking Carnival for fear of a full fledged moderator lockdown on your privileges to be a longhorn fan, is the fact that 3 players – db’s Deon Beasley, Christian Scott and WR Brandon Collins are currently ineligible due to academic issues with the NCAA. To paraphrase Mack ” we don’t know anything about that shit but it’s getting figured out”. If I’m not mistaken Collins and Beasley played a lot last year and Christian Scott is the Longhorn messiah at the safety position..anything to get the much maligned Blake Gideon off the field (you know they secretly hate this kid’s guts – poor guy – personally I think he’s awesome). Can’t blame the kids though, I can’t imagine how hard the classes must be at the Harvard of the South.
Overall, they’re in pretty good shape heading into their marquee matchup/roadgame of their non conference slate – a trip to Laramie to play the mighty Wyoming Cowboys. Hey it’s the only other team on the schedule that’s not a commuter school with some directional stigma attached to it – this shit is big time..they are literally playing the entire state of Wyoming, which just happens to be smaller than their enrollment…oops. Let’s face it – unless the Cowboys can figure out a way to transport some rabid Grizzlies from Yellowstone and set them loose in the Longhorn dressing room at half time this one’s a laugher. Keep an eye on the OL injuries and DB depth though, could become an issue if anyone else goes down as they have Tech coming to town next week.
Won't matter..
